PILOT PHASE

A new way to eat local
in the Scottish Borders

The Borders Food Hub is a decentralised, producer-led platform that makes it easy for you to buy directly from small-scale growers and makers across the Scottish Borders.

Following the 2025 feasibility study commissioned by South of Scotland Enterprise, Abundant Borders SCIO is now laying the foundations for a pilot that will be live later this year.

We’re building something simple, transparen and designed by producers for producers and communities.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is this a full service, and why is it limited?

This is a small-scale pilot, intentionally limited in size and product range. Keeping it small allows us to test our systems and logistics, work closely with producers, ensure quality and reliability, and build a model that can scale sustainably before expanding.

How do I place an order?

Orders are placed online via our shop on the Open Food Network. You can browse products, add items to your basket, and pay securely online.

When can I order, and why not every week?

The shop opens for 5 days in each fortnightly cycle - orders are open Friday at 12pm until Tuesday at 12pm in Week 1, and then packed and ready for collection in Week 2. The hub operates on this fortnightly cycle to align with producer capacity and keep logistics simple during the pilot phase.

Where and when do I collect my order?

All orders are collected from a central hub location in Melrose. Collection takes place on a single day during Week 2: Friday between 3pm and 5pm. Full details and instructions will be provided after ordering.

Is delivery available?

No. This is a collection-only model for the pilot.

What happens if I miss my collection slot?

As this is a small pilot with limited storage, it's important that orders are collected within the time window. If you are unable to collect, please contact us in advance.

Where does the food come from?

All products are supplied by local producers based in the Scottish Borders and surrounding area.

What kind of products are available?

The range will vary each cycle but may include fresh vegetables, meat and dairy, bread and baked goods, and preserves and pantry items. Availability depends on seasonality, producer supply, and small-scale production limits, so the same products may not always be available.

How do I pay? Can I pay cash on collection?

All payments are made online at the time of ordering via the Open Food Network platform. Cash payments on collection are not accepted - payment must be made in advance online.

Can anyone order, and how do I join the pilot?

During the pilot, access may be limited to a small group of customers so we can test the system effectively. You can register your interest and we will be in touch if spaces become available.

Will there be more products and options in future?

If the pilot is successful, the hub aims to increase customer numbers, expand the product range, involve more local producers, and explore additional collection points or delivery options.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is this a full service or a pilot?

This is a small-scale pilot, intentionally limited in size and product range. Keeping it small allows us to test systems, work closely with producers, and build a model that can scale sustainably before expanding.

How can I sell through the hub, and is there a cost?

Producers must register on the Open Food Network, add their products, and give permission for Borders Food Hub to sell on their behalf. The hub operates on a commission basis, which is applied to sales.

What is expected of producers?

Producers are expected to keep their product listings up to date, confirm availability each cycle, and deliver pre-packed goods to the hub on the agreed day.

Can new producers join during the pilot?

Yes, but numbers are limited. Additional producers may be onboarded in a controlled way as the pilot progresses. Please register your interest and we will be in touch if spaces become available.

Will the hub expand?

If the pilot is successful, the hub aims to increase customer numbers, expand the product range, involve more local producers, and explore additional collection points or delivery options.
